Hannah Dundee: Battling Beasts and Bandits by Jade Gretz
The Cursed Canyon: Hannah Dundee's Trial
The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the arid landscape. A vast canyon spread out before Hannah Dundee, its jagged cliffs and rocky outcrops hiding countless dangers. The air was thick with tension, every rustle of the wind a potential sign of danger. The world of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was unforgiving, and Hannah knew better than anyone that survival depended on a sharp mind and quick reflexes.
Hannah, with her auburn hair pulled back in a tight braid, stood at the edge of the canyon, her piercing blue eyes scanning the treacherous path ahead. She wore a rugged leather vest and pants, practical attire for the harsh environment. Strapped to her back was a modified crossbow, its bolts tipped with a potent tranquilizer. A survival knife rested at her hip, gleaming in the fading light.
This was no ordinary journey. The canyon was notorious, whispered about in the fearful tones of those who had ventured in and never returned. It was said to be cursed, a place where the very earth seemed to conspire against the living. Dinosaurs roamed its depths, drawn by some unseen force, and traps laid by ancient civilizations still lay hidden, waiting to claim the unwary.
But Hannah had no choice. Somewhere deep within the canyon was an artifact of unimaginable power, something that could either save their world or destroy it. It was said to be the key to controlling the dinosaurs, to turning the tide in their ongoing struggle for survival. And Hannah was determined to find it.
Taking a deep breath, Hannah began her descent. The path was narrow, barely more than a ledge carved into the canyon wall. Loose rocks crumbled beneath her boots, tumbling into the abyss below. She moved with the grace of a panther, each step calculated, each movement deliberate. There was no room for error; one misstep could send her plummeting to her death.
As she descended, the air grew cooler, and the shadows deepened. The sun was almost gone now, the canyon plunged into twilight. Hannah's senses were on high alert, every nerve …(see the rest of the story at deviantart.com/jadegretzAI). Xenozoic Tales Vol. 1
by Mark Schultz
After the Cataclysm, the Earth has reawakened and the dinosaurs walk the world again. But man still has some artifacts of old civilization - ruined cities, firearms, and mechanical marvels that power the cities and can move him around this new world. But there are still dangers around every corner, and you need a man like Jack Tenrec to keep you safe.
Quite the phenomenon in the late 1980's and early 1990s, this book reprints issues one through six and includes the very first Xenozoic story from Death Rattle #8. The first issues featured two stories each and served to really set up this world. In fact, this entire volume is Schultz world-building and establishing his characters. The world is a different place and much technology has been lost in the 500 years since the Cataclysm. Some people retain the ability to work with machines, but others have degenerated to a hunter/gatherer state. While people still huddle in cities, the interior of the land is very wild and dangerous and hides many unique secrets.
While there are still scientists hoping to bring mankind back to a greater form of civilization, there are also criminals and politicians that only look out for themselves. The more things change, the more they stay the same! The complexities of this new world only offer more issues and more conflict.
Jack Tenrec is a mechanic and a de facto leader in the tribe of the City by the Sea. While he chooses not to be an official member of the government, others look up to him and respect him for his ideals. He warns that people should live in concert with the world, not try to change it for their benefit, but those in power don't often listen until it's too late. Jack's affinity for machines has him living and working in a garage separated from the rest of the city, where he works on his archaic vehicles and converts them to guano power from whatever those ancients used. Cleaner energy for sure!
Jack is introduced to Hannah Dundee, an ambassador and something of a scientist from the distant land of Wasson. She seeks to initiate trade and knowledge exchange between the tribes. She is insatiably curious and headstrong. Just like any woman should be in the post-Cataclysmic world.
There's a lot of commentary in the undertones of the book, and some that's not exactly undertones as well. This book forms a cautionary tale about ecological and political disaster that we can still take to heart almost 35 years later. And all of it is draped in a lot of pulp action and gorgeous line art.
Schultz is in the same category of the Dave Stevens (The Rocketeer), Al Williamson (Flash Gordon), and Milton Cannif (Terry and the Pirates). His art style is gorgeous with detailed lines and a style that borders on the cheesecake. You won't find any ugly women in this series! He takes special care in rendering the animals and dinosaurs as well, and his backgrounds are full of detail and shadow that just draws you into this world. From complex machinery that has a real Jack Kirby feel to the expanses of the Xenozoic world, each panel is a joy to explore. This book is worth your time even if you don't want to read the story. Just page through it and absorb the artwork.
Filled with monsters, machines, and mysteries, Xenozoic Tales is certainly worth a read. Escape the current world for an afternoon and disappear into Mark Schultz's creation. You won't regret it.

CARTOON REVIEW: Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
An odd, dieselpunk sci-fi cartoon with a hint of mysticism that captures that badass Borderlands vibe I love so much while also tackling themes of coexistence and environmentalism. Quahoon!
READ THE FULL REVIEW HERE [NSFW warning]
Come hang out on my website, there's a ton of cool stuff there, including original music and cringey old AMVs, porny pinup sketches, original novels, and of course, plenty of other cartoon and anime reviews (including many 18+ titles)!

When I published my sketchbook in 2003, I was invited to table at a few local Toronto comic-book conventions. I had a standing offer that if a customer paid a bit extra, he/she could get a finished drawing from me. Chris C of Hamilton took up the offer and asked for "Hannah Dundee" after I told him that I'd worked on the Nelvana cartoon.. Last night, I fixed a copy of his drawing in Photoshop and added some digital color. The hair is clearly over-done, but overall I still like the drawing!

Hannah Dundee: Dinosaurs and Danger Unleashed by Jade Gretz
The air shimmered, distorting the world around Hannah like a mirage in a desert. A searing wind whipped at her tattered clothes, carrying with it the guttural bellows of unseen creatures. She squinted against the harsh sunlight, the cloudless sky an endless expanse of turquoise mocking her predicament.
Hannah, a renowned paleontologist, found herself inexplicably transported from the sterile confines of her laboratory to this hostile terrain. One moment she was meticulously examining a fossil, the next, she was sprawled on a bed of coarse sand, surrounded by towering red rock formations that seemed to defy gravity.
Panic gnawed at the edges of her consciousness, but Hannah, a survivor by nature, forced it down. Survival meant clear thinking, and right now, the most pressing issue was figuring out where the hell she was.
Her gaze swept across the desolate landscape. Sparse vegetation clung to the rocky slopes, offering little in the way of food or shelter. The air, thick with a prehistoric tang, vibrated with the distant calls of unseen creatures. This wasn't a scene from a textbook; this was a nightmare given life.
As Hannah pushed herself up, a sharp pain lanced through her ankle. Glancing down, she saw a nasty gash bleeding from a twisted angle. Cursing under her breath, she assessed the damage. Broken? Probably not. Sprained, for sure.
Ignoring the throbbing pain, she rummaged in her backpack, a comforting piece of familiarity amidst the surreal landscape. Thankfully, a first-aid kit was nestled amongst the notebooks and fossil samples. With practiced ease, she cleaned and bandaged her wound, wincing at the sting of the antiseptic.
Now, came the question of location. Hannah, a master navigator, scanned the horizon for any recognizable landmarks. But everything looked alien, unfamiliar. The towering red rocks, sculpted by millennia of wind and erosion, offered no clues.
Suddenly, a booming cry ripped through the air, sending shivers down her spine. From the valley below, a colossal shadow emerged from behind a towering rock format …(see the rest of the story at deviantart.com/jadegretzAI).
